Rennes will look to keep their winning streak going when they face Bordeaux in the Ligue 1 on Sunday.
After finishing tenth last season, Rennes are mounting a challenge for the Champions League places. If they win on Sunday, they can eclipse last campaign’s points total in March itself. Currently, they are in third place which is the Champions League qualifying spot. Lille in fourth place are hot on their tails. They are just a point below Rennes as it stands. Rennes have won their last three games, and they will need to continue like this to keep their hold on third place.
Rennes hosted Montpellier in their last game and thrashed them 5-0. It was a dominating performance from the home side. Faitout Maouassa gave them an early lead, and Adrien Hunou doubled the advantage before half-time. Three goals followed after the interval, and two of those were penalties. Rennes had nine efforts on target in the game, and Montpellier had just one in comparison. The win was a timely one as they had lost their last game in the cup.
Saint-Etienne beat them 2-1 in the French Cup semi-final to advance to the final. Rennes took the lead through M’Baye Niang, but they could not hold on. Saint-Etienne scored the winner in stoppage time to knock Rennes out in cruel fashion. The loss ended Rennes’ only hope of silverware this season. However, their season has been a great one regardless of that defeat. Qualifying for the Champions League will be the perfect way to round up the campaign.
Bordeaux are in a bad patch as it stands, and they have not won in their last four league games. They are now 12th in the table. Bordeaux started the season well, but they did not continue that form after the early months. Their last win came against Metz in February. In their last game, they salvaged a 1-1 draw with Saint-Etienne at the Geoffroy-Guichard. Bordeaux have conceded in each of their previous six league games.
However, they have also scored in those six games, which is a positive sign. Josh Maja scored their goal against Saint-Etienne. That strike took his tally to six for the season. Nicolas de Preville and Hwang Ui-Jo have also scored six times for Bordeaux this campaign. Jimmy Briand is their top-scorer with seven goals to his name.
Rennes are unbeaten in their last seven games against Bordeaux. They have won four times, and the other clashes ended in draws. All those seven meetings have seen under 2.5 goals in total. The last game between these two ended in a 1-0 win for Rennes in December.
Bordeaux vs Rennes Prediction
They will be the favorites yet again, but the game will be a close one. Both sides should score, as Bordeaux have a potent attacking unit. But Rennes are in great form, and they should get the three points.
