Bayern München vs Olimpia Milano – EuroLeague Round 1 – Match Preview and Prediction

Bayern Munich will host Olimpia Milano at the Audi Dome in their first EuroLeague game of the new season.

Both these sides were neck to neck in the table last year. Bayern finished 11th in the regular season courtesy of winning 14 out of their 30 league games. They could not reach the playoffs and were short by just one win. Their points differential was -56, which is not a solid number. Bayern have not been able to dominate on the continental stage, but they have been prominent in the domestic spectrum.

They have won the German Championship five times, and two of those have come in the last two years. They beat Alba Berlin to defend their title. Nihad Dedovic was crowned as the Finals MVP. Bayern will be the strong favorites to retain their crown this season as well. In comparison, their performances in the EuroLeague have not been encouraging. They have made Top 16 just once, which was five years ago. Since then they have failed to better that.

Dedovic will be the key player again for Bayern Munich this season. Aside from the Bosnian, former NBA player Greg Monroe will suit up for Bayern Munich as well. Monroe has played in the NBA for about a decade and he made the move to Germany this year. His last NBA side was the Philadelphia 76ers. Bayern will hope to continue their domestic dominance, but continental progress will be one of the goals for next season as well.

Just like Bayern, Olimpia Milano won 14 out of their 30 regular season games last season. They couldn’t get into the playoffs and progress further in the competition. But their showing in the Serie A has been much better. Milano have won the title in three of the last six years. In the three seasons when they failed to win, they reached the semifinal in all of those. Last season Reyer Venezia trumped them in the final to win the Serie A.

Olimpia Milano have been in the EuroLeague consistently, but they have done little more than just participating. A credible challenge for the title has not been seen yet from their side. In the last three years, 12th is the highest finish they have achieved. That was done last season. Coach Simone Pianigiani will hope to better that this time.

Milan reached the quarter-finals of the EuroLeague in 2014, which was a good showing from them. Maccabi Tel Aviv eliminated them by winning the series 3-1. Since then, they have failed to make much impact on this stage. Their domestic dominance has given them another chance to do so.

Bayern München vs Olimpia Milano Prediction

Bayern have won the last two games between these two sides, but Milan had won the two before that. The game will be a close one, with the points differential being less than 5 points. Both teams will score more than 70 points, and Bayern should get the close win to open the new season.
