Augsburg will face Hannover at the Augsburg Arena on Saturday in what will be a crucial clash at the foot of the Bundesliga table.
Augsburg are currently in 15th place, which is just one spot above the relegation playoff place. Stuttgart occupy that spot, and Augsburg lead them by three points. They are still in danger of relegation, and three points on Saturday would be a major boost. Last week they claimed a goalless draw at Leipzig. The week before that, they beat the then leaders Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at home. That result was a huge one, and no one really saw it coming. Manuel Baum’s side are currently eight points clear of opponents Hannover, a gap which they would want to increase.
In terms of team news, Andre Hahn will return from suspension from Augsburg. However, the presence of top-scorer Alfred Finnbogason is a doubt. The Iceland international has not fully recovered from injury, and defender Jeffrey Gouweleeue is a doubt as well.
Hannover are not in a good place, and they have lost eight out of their last nine Bundesliga games. The only win was a 2-0 result over 10-man Nurnberg last month. They have won just three games all season, and sit second from last in the table. Stuttgart, who are in the relegation playoff spot are 5 points above them, and that is the gap Thomas Doll’s side has to recover.Embed from Getty Images
Their last game was a 3-2 loss against Bayer Leverkusen, a game in which they conceded a late winner. Striker Bobby Wood was not even in the squad that day, a result of his poor performances recently. His last goal came way back in November. Jonathas has taken over the role from Wood, and the Brazilian striker was recalled from a loan spell in January by Doll.
Augsburg vs Hannover Match Preview
Augsburg’s Michael Gregoritsch has a good record against Hannover, and the midfielder has four goals in his last five meetings with the club. If Finnbogason does not feature, the likes of Gregoritsch and Hahn will have to take the goalscoring burden.
Hannover are still looking for their first away win of the season. Their last win on the road came in game-week nine last season. Hannover’s defence is the worst in the Bundesliga, as they have conceded 58 goals. This makes Augsburg the favourites for the tie, and playing at home should see them through.
Only Nurnberg have scored fewer goals than Hannover’s 23 this season. The top scorers for Doll’s side are on three goals, which tells you all you need to know about Hannover’s attack. They are highly likely to be relegated, but Augsburg can yet avoid the drop.
Baum’s side should win the game, though it could be by a close margin. Time is running out for Hannover, and failure to get three points here would be another nail in the coffin. Unfortunately for them, Augsburg look likely to strike that nail.
