Atlanta United vs NY Red Bulls – MLS 2019 – Sunday, 7th July, 2019

Atlanta United will host the NY Red Bulls at the Mercedez-Benz Stadium in the MLS on Saturday.

Both these sides are close in the table in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta are fourth in the table, and the Red Bulls are sixth. Finishing first is not possible for either, so making the playoffs will be the prime objective. Atlanta have played 18 games, which is less than many teams around them. If they win their games in hand, they can reach as high as second in the table.

In the last six league games, Atlanta have won thrice and lost thrice. They also played twice in the US Open Cup during that time. Atlanta won both those games in comfortable fashion, and they have progressed to the quarter-final. Saint Louis FC will be their opponents in the quarter-final. As for the league, their last game was an embarrassing loss. Chicago beat them 5-1 last week which must have been a shot to their confidence.

An early red card for Leandro Gonzalez Pirez was the major factor which turned the tide against Atlanta. Brandon Vazquez’s goal was little more than a consolation for his side. In their last nine league games, Atlanta have conceded nine goals. Ironically, they are a really good defensive side. In total, they have conceded just 20 goals this season in the league. Josef Martinez should return to the lineup against Red Bulls. He is their top scorer this season as he has scored ten goals in the league.

The Red Bulls are just two points behind Atlanta. They are in sixth place, but Toronto in seventh place are four points behind them. Their form is similar to that of Atlanta. They have won three times in their last five league games. Their previous two games have been contrasting results. They beat Chicago 3-1 last week courtesy of goals from Alejandro Romero, Brian White, and Daniel Royer.

The Red Bulls’ last game was against Houston Dynamo. Houston claimed a comprehensive 4-0 win on the day. Both sides received late red cards, but it did not change the tide of the game. Houston were clinical, and they converted four of their five shots on target to win the game.

The Red Bulls have one of the best offence in the league. Only two sides in their conference have scored more than their 30 goals for the season. Brian White is their top scorer with five goals so far. Many players have turned up with goals which has kept them going. A win against Atlanta should push them above their opponents in the table.

Atlanta United vs NY Red Bulls Prediction

Neither side was good in their last game, and this will be a close contest. Both sides will want to get back to winning ways, but a draw seems like the most likely outcome. The total goals should be greater than 2.5 in the game, and both sides will score as well.
