Angers vs Rennes Preview and Prediction

Two mid-table sides will meet at the Stade Raymond Kopa when Angers host Rennes in the Ligue 1 on Saturday. Both sides are separated by just four points in the table, and by one position.

Rennes made the Coupe de France final on Tuesday when they beat Lyon 3-2 in an impressive performance. They will face Paris Saint-Germain in the final later this month. Julien Stephan’s side is on a high, and they will be confident of getting the three points against Angers. Stephan has been at the club for a short time, but the semi-final victory has the team in good spirits.

However, their recent form has been patchy. They have won just two out of their last five league games. Arsenal knocked them out of the Europa League, even though Rennes were holding a 3-1 advantage from the first leg. Their last Ligue 1 defeat were at the hands of Lyon, where they conceded a late winner.

Angers vs Rennes Preview and Prediction

Angers are 11th in the table, four points below Rennes. They are winless in their last five league encounters, and they were on a three-game winning streak before that. Last time’s 2-2 draw against Marseille was the fourth successive time Angers had shared the points. It was a good performance though, as Stephane Moulin’s side came back from a 2-0 deficit to clinch a point.

Angers have scored 11 goals in their last seven games, but their defense has been porous. They could be without their top-scorer Stephane Bahoken, who has scored nine goals this season in the league. A good home record gives them promise, and they are unbeaten in the last four matches at the Stade Raymond Kopa.

Rennes’ away form is not good, as they have lost three times in the last six away games. They have kept just one clean sheet in the last 11 games in all competitions. This suggests that they have a high chance of conceding this Saturday. M’Baye Niang and Hatem Ben Arfa are their key players, and the two have combined for 11 goals in the league this season.

The head to head record suggests grim reading for Angers, as they have not won a single game out of the previous ten clashes. Rennes won 1-0 in the last match between the two sides, courtesy of a goal from Ismaila Sarr. Both sides should score in this game, but it will be a close game.

Rennes have a lot of injuries to deal with, and the likes of Romain Danze, Ludovic Baal, and Abdoulaye Diallo will not feature for them. Angers could be without Bahoken and Yoann Andreu. Jeff Reine-Adelaide could start as the striker in Bahoken’s absence.

The two sides are close in the league table, and neither have anything to play for in the league. Rennes have a chance of silverware in the Cup, but there is still time for that. The total goals in this one should be over 2.5, as a close game is highly possible.
