Champions Paris Saint-Germain will travel to face Angers at the Stade Jean-Bouin on Saturday in the Ligue 1.
PSG claimed their sixth league title in the last seven seasons two weeks ago. The inevitable was confirmed when second-placed Lille failed to beat Toulouse. PSG have been excellent again this season domestically, and their stranglehold on the Ligue 1 seems to be strengthening. Despite their recent erratic form, they are still a whopping 16 points clear of Lille in second place.
The title seemed inevitable, and that caused PSG to loosen up a little bit. In their last five Ligue 1 games, they have won just one. That win was a 3-1 result against Moncao, as Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick. In those five games, PSG have suffered three losses. Lille thrashed them 5-1, and that defeat was arguably the most embarrassing of the lot. Montpellier and Nantes are the other teams to beat them in that run.
PSG were also in the French Cup, and they played Rennes in the final. It started well for them, and they were leading 2-0 in the first half. But Rennes made it 2-2 in regulation, and went on to prevail on penalties. Mbappe was sent off in that game. It’s safe to say that PSG’s end to the season is not a perfect one. One of the bright spots has been Neymar’s recovery from injury, as the Brazilian had been out for a couple of months.
Just like PSG, Angers also have nothing left to play for as the season nears its conclusion. They are 12th in the table and safe from any danger of relegation. Angers can still finish in the top half, and that will be the aim for coach Stephane Moulin. Strasbourg are in tenth place currently, and Angers are just a point below them. A top-half finish is not out of reach for them as it stands.
Angers have won two out of their last five league games. Last week they faced Bordeaux and produced a clinical display to win 1-0. Angers had only one shot on target but scored with it to get the three points. Stephane Bahoken got the solitary goal. Bahoken will be crucial to their hopes again, as he has been their top scorer this season with 11 goals.
Angers have often adopted such tactics this season. They are content to have less of the ball and take a conservative approach. This season Angers have drawn 15 games, and only two sides in the Ligue 1 have drawn more. In the last four games, they have scored one goal each, which is a sign of their sub-par attack.
Angers vs PSG Prediction
PSG will go into the game as favorites, despite some recent shaky performances. Angers should make it tough for them, as they have the home advantage. They have scored nine goals in their last five games. The game will be a close one and expect more than 2.5 goals in this clash.
