The football season everywhere has come to a halt because of the ongoing pandemic. Plenty of leagues were halted mid-way, including the 2019/20 Bundesliga season. We don’t know when or if the season will resume again but this is a good time to look back at some of the fresh, young players who made an impact in this season. They are certainly future prospects to look forward to in the coming years.
Hoffenheim have found a real gem in 20-year-old Austrian footballer Christoph Baumgartner. The talented midfielder scored four goals along with one assist in the current season and took 37 shots. While he has only played 19 matches in his Bundesliga career so far, he has been truly impressive. Baumgartner is a versatile player and has shown the ability to perform from any position. He’s technically sound, dribbles well and appears to have a mature head on his shoulders.
Ismail Jakobs burst onto the scene with Cologne where he owned the left wing spot. In Bundesliga 2019/20 season, he has been mostly used as a winger for the team. In his short career so far, Ismail has had two goals and an assist and has impressed in the limited opportunities he has got. He is one of those players who combines pace and power and is extremely skillful with his passes. The 20-year-old offers a goal threat and will be an important tool for his team in the coming seasons.
He is being touted as Bayern Munich’s next generation star who will go places. In fact, many feel that Alphonso Davies is the fastest player at Bayern Munich right now. The 19-year-old Canadian joined the club in early 2019 from Vancouver Whitecap and has shown that he is competent while defending and attacking in equal measure. Also, he has explosive pace and is terrific with his left foot. While Davies was originally signed as a winger, he has done a remarkable job at left-back. He is fast developing into the best young player in the league.
Ruben Vargas grabbed headlines when he smashed three goals in his first month at the WWK Arena for Augsburg this season. The 21-year-old winger from Switzerland has been a revelation in the league who made a mark in his second game itself as he helped his team earn the first point of the campaign. In fact, he was carrying Augsburg’s attack this season with his incredibly high speed. Vargas has pace, flamboyance and a low centre of gravity – all the hallmarks of a superstar in the making.
The young German defender was one of the shining lights for Cologne along with Ismail. Initially, he spent the first few games on the bench but once he was given his opportunity the team used him for 13 games before he was stopped by injury. Kilian showed very good skills in possessing the ball and excellent with his defense. In fact, it was because of Kilian that the team’s defense improved drastically.
